Among the highlights of the year were the numerous presentations given by SFIVET researchers at conferences both in Switzerland and abroad. SFIVET researchers received invitations from the German Parliament, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the European Commission and the ECVET conference in Vienna, among others. The considerable coverage of SFIVET research findings by the Swiss press was also a gratifying development.

The Research & Development Division held its own international conference, the 6th Congress on Research in Vocational Education and Training in Switzerland. This three-day event held at SFIVET’s campus in Zollikofen was devoted to the theme: ‘The end of VET as we know it?’ This event drew a total of 170 researchers from 26 different countries to discuss key issues affecting vocational education and training in times of uncertainty and disruption – when new technological and social skills as well as creativity and innovative ideas are needed.

The Best Paper Award presented at this conference was given to SFIVET researchers. The winning paper examines the impact that vocational skills and general education have on the wage gap between young women and men holding vocational qualifications. This paper prevailed over more than 90 competing submissions.

SFIVET researchers not only successfully completed important research projects in 2019, but also secured funding for several new projects, including two from the National Research Programme ‘Digital Transformation’ and four from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
