Sexual Harassment Awareness Day 2023

The first ‘Sexual Harassment Awareness Day’ takes place at universities throughout Switzerland on 23 March 2023. SFUVET is also participating in this campaign day. The aim is to highlight the causes, forms and consequences of sexual harassment. Preventing sexual harassment requires knowledge and awareness.

Sexual Harassment Awareness Day

Reports about sexism and sexual violence in the Swiss media industry several weeks ago sparked a strong reaction. Many victims outlined their experiences, giving the impression that the media industry is particularly susceptible to inappropriate behaviour and sexism. However, it would be wrong to assume that sexism and sexual harassment are only found in certain sectors as they can occur in very different environments, including at Swiss universities.

The Swiss universities and research institutions wish to ensure that all university members can study and work in a safe and respectful environment. This is why the Sexual Harassment Awareness Day was launched as part of the ‘P-7: Diversity, Inclusion and Equal Opportunities in University Development’ project of swissuniversities.

By participating in this campaign day, the Swiss universities are raising awareness together for the first time about the issue of sexual harassment in the university environment. Background knowledge and information about effective courses of action will be communicated as part of the campaign day as preventative measures to combat sexual harassment and sexismHowever, this means we must reflect on our own behaviour, respect other people’s boundaries and assume responsibility.

SFUVET does not tolerate any form of sexual harassment or sexism

At SFUVET we are committed to respecting the dignity and protecting the personal integrity of all members of the university community. Successful work and study requires a climate of trust where everyone feels safe and respected. Treating each other with respect – especially verbally – is an essential part of an open university culture. At SFUVET we do not tolerate any form of sexual harassment or sexism. We protect the members of our university community against inappropriate behaviour and investigate incidents rigorously. Any incidents of inappropriate behaviour should be reported to the guidance counselling office.

Victims often find it difficult and painful to counter sexual harassment which is why it is so important that we intervene when we observe unacceptable behaviour. We confront perpetrators of sexist behaviour or other forms of sexual harassment instead of overlooking or ignoring it.

We must all assume responsibility, firmly opposing inappropriate behaviour by addressing, rejecting and reporting it. The Sexual Harassment Awareness Day 2023 programme provides useful points of contact for raising awareness and improving knowledge. In this spirit I encourage you to obtain information about and to discuss this issue as part of the campaign day.
