Strong international demand for innovative learning cultures

Prof. Dr. Antje Barabasch gave a keynote address at the South African conference “Promoting occupational skills and research for sustainable TVET” held online by the Department of Technology and Vocational Education at the Tshwane University of Technology in October 2021. She spoke about the “new learning cultures in vocational education and training” and reported on the results of her research project at SFUVET to an international audience.

Vocational education and training (VET) and the development of professional skills associated with it is one of the approaches being adopted in Africa to combat social inequality. The aim is to teach the skills required to earn a living to combat poverty, inequality and unemployment. The three-day conference gave academics in South Africa the opportunity to present their research and to engage in intensive discussion. The presentations covered a wide range of topics including access to VET for various marginalised groups, national certification, careers advice, ICT training for vocational trainers, participatory research methods in practical training and assessment and evaluation in VET.
