As the highlight of the year, the Basic Training Division introduced two major innovations in autumn 2019: the revised vocational pedagogy courses and the new Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education and Training.

SFIVET also launched a pilot ‘recognition of non-formal and informal learning procedure’ in the German-speaking region of Switzerland for participants enrolled in the certification programme for the vocational school teacher’s diploma (VSTD). This recognition procedure is modelled after the now established ‘recognition of non-formal and informal learning procedure’ that SFIVET in Lausanne has been offering for some time. The procedure enables participants to obtain credits for vocational teaching experience gained in the past. In addition, due to increased demand, SFIVET introduced a second certification programme for both the VSTD and the professional education institution teacher’s diploma in Zurich.

In 2019, the Conseil académique des hautes écoles romandesen charge de la formation des enseignants(CAHR), which is an intercantonal body responsible for coordinating teacher training programmes in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, gave its approval for SFIVET to join the current intercantonal cooperation agreement signed by universities of teacher education in the cantons of Vaud, Bern, Fribourg, Jura, Neuchatel and Geneva. SFIVET’s participation in this cooperation agreement will run for the period 2019–2024 and is currently limited to its certification programme for the federal vocational baccalaureate teacher’s certificate.

SFIVET also organised five events with two other partners: the Conferenza della Svizzera italiana per la formazione continua degli adulti, which is a non-partisan and nondenominational association devoted to adult education in the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland, and the Vocational Education and Training Division of the Canton of Ticino. These five events were part of the conference series entitled ‘Un’officina delle idee: incontri per l’innovazione nella formazione professionale’, a think tank focussing on recent developments affecting vocational education and training and the economy, e.g. digital transformation or climate activism among young people.
