New research project on the promotion of apprenticeships in canton Zurich

Forecasts for canton Zurich indicate a rise in the number of students at upper-secondary level by 2030. This means the shortage of apprenticeships is expected to get worse over the medium term. This is why the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training OBS SFUVET has been assigned the task of establishing the knowledge base required to gain a better understanding of the options for promoting apprenticeships in canton Zurich.

To continue providing targeted support for the promotion of apprenticeships in the future, canton Zurich’s Department of Education has assigned a research project on the promotion of apprenticeships to the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training OBS SFUVET. The following three key questions will be analysed:

  1. How can the willingness to provide training be promoted?
  2. How are professional organisations currently involved in the promotion of apprenticeships?
  3. Which areas of action can be identified?

A review of existing research literature, a collection and evaluation of relevant documents and interviews with representatives from professional organisations, cantonal authorities and best practice companies will be used to provide optimal answers to these questions.

Prof. Dr. Lukas Graf, Head of the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training OBS SFUVET, and Prof. Dr. Jürg Schweri, Co-Head of the «Strategic planning of VET» research area, will lead the project.
