The Research & Development Division worked on a considerable number of projects in 2018, namely 40. It was able to secure two new SNSF projects, thereby increasing its level of SNSF participation to a total of five ongoing projects. One of these is the travelling exhibition FOCUS (German), which has been very popular in the French-speaking region of Switzerland.

SFIVET researchers gave 96 presentations at scientific congresses and produced 155 publications – including four books that may also be used as science-based teaching aids. The joint conference organised by SFIVET and the Swiss Association for Applied Research in Vocational Education and Training (SGAB) on the role of workplace trainers also focussed on the interlinkages between research and teaching. In addition, SFIVET successfully organised a two-day contact seminar where representatives of German-speaking vocational schools from Germany, Austria and Switzerland discussed digitalisation and the need for skilled workers.

OBS SFIVET continued its work with the new trend monitoring system established in 2017. Based on their analyses, researchers concluded that the topic ‘Upskilling: design, support, use and individual benefits of the vocational baccalaureate’ should be explored more deeply in 2019.

At the strategic level, SFIVET took various steps to strengthen the links between research and teaching, in particular by developing a concept enabling lecturers to become involved in research activities.
