SFUVET expertise on permeability between baccalaureate schools and VET

At a meeting of the parliamentary group on VET, researchers from the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training OBS SFUVET presented the latest findings on the topic of ‘from baccalaureate school to apprenticeship?’

In a postulate the National Council called upon the Federal Council to present how opportunities for successful transition from baccalaureate schools to apprenticeship can be improved. The topic of permeability between baccalaureate school and VET was identified as an education policy challenge in 2019 by the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training OBS SFUVET and discussed in a ‘Trends in Focus’ report.

Dr. Belinda Aeschlimann and Prof. Dr. Jürg Schweri have now presented the latest figures and scientific findings on permeability between baccalaureate schools and VET to the parliamentary group on VET.  On this basis, they presented proposals on the development of the education system.

No transition without a qualification?

The presentation clearly indicated that reorientation at upper-secondary level is a common phenomenon observed throughout Switzerland and that often occurs at regional level. VET is the preferred option in the case of reorientation from baccalaureate schools. Host companies consider former baccalaureate school students as a sought-after group of apprentices.

Educational achievements at baccalaureate schools can only be counted towards VET if a formal qualification (such as the baccalaureate) has been obtained. For example, the period of VET training can then be shortened. While admission to VET programmes is possible after leaving baccalaureate school prematurely, the educational achievements gained at baccalaureate school do not generally count.

Updated version of ‘Trends in focus’ report

In view of this topic’s high degree of relevance, the 2019 ‘Trends in focus’ report is currently being revised and an updated version will be published shortly.
